I Have Had 3 Falls In 5 Days. My Legs Collapse Without Warning And I Crash To The Ground. I Am Frightened. I Don’t Know What To Do.
The doctor said to do balance and strength exercises but that wont help with atrophy. Do I visit a neurologist for advice or give up doing things in the house like preparing meals and washing up.
I didn’t believe that exercise would help. On this forum I received advice to get a physiotherapist who understands SMA. I was surprised when my case manager found such a person. He assessed me and has given me exercises according to what is worthwhile for me. They have helped. I can feel the advantage and do them each day.
That is awesome news Sue!! Keep up the good work. I always feel better when I stretch and exercise but not too much!
Get electric mobility with a seat that can adjust height electrically. I recommend scooter as then tiller provide support. I been there and believe me don't put yourself in position ro hurt yourself like so many of us before you. Get on it. Also Get PT or aqua aerobics. Use flatbsole shoes.
Doctora cannot fo anything.
It seems for me that weakness comes in waves. I need to make a note of the days I feel strong so I remember they come around to. I found an OT/PT evaluation helpful. If you are falling with that degree of frequency, then it might be time for a wheelchair. Doing household tasks will take longer, but it is still doable. Hire help if you can to take the pressure off the relationship balance.
I understand your concerns. My biggest fear is falling. After fracturing my hip and knee from a bad fall, I started using a platform walker. It helps me to walk without losing my balance. It also helped me continue to do things around the house. I use a scooter outside to get around faster and safer.
Are you doing PT. They can help you with strength and balance and they can evaluate you to help you find a device that works best for you. Good Luck.
